While some of us may not have the courage to come out of our shell, Aki Mizutani, now a Film Director at Cutters Studio proves anything is possible if you just go out there and do it!

Cutters Studios is an award-winning creative company specialising in production and post-production needs with offices in Detroit, Los Angeles, Tokyo and New York City. Some of Aki’s works include commercial spots for Nike, Toyota, AT&T, Kikkoman, Mercedez Benz and Asahi, just to name a few. She even worked with American rock legend and Van Halen vocalist David Lee Roth in a film called “Tokyo Story”.

To get to know our inspiring interviewee, here is a short but meaningful story about Aki:

Q. Let’s talk about your current business/profession, what do you do?

I direct and edit commercial films. I started my career as a commercial film editor. Now the format of advertising commercial films are so varied, just editing limits your career and opportunities. So, I had been trying to do more directing as well. It has been going well so far.

Q. Given what you know today, if we took a time machine back to the beginning, what would you have done differently?

I would be more humble about my skills and knowledge.

Q. Tell me something that’s true, that almost nobody agrees with you on.

I wanted to go to Hollywood to make a film when I was a child. Nobody believed me but after a couple of decades, I went to the Oscars.

Q. How old were you when you had your first paying job?

I had my first job when I was 16 years old. It was a cashier job in a little local store.

Q. How lucky are you and why?

I wished really strongly on how I want to be like in the future and I am in the exact future right now. How lucky I am?

In 2012, Aki even received an international accolade for her work on the Oscar-nominated documentary called “The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom”, released in 2011. She was also chosen as one of the “40 Under 40” leaders in advertising and marketing by Campaign Asia-Pacific in 2017.

Aki is indeed one of the women to look up to for those who want to be in the film and advertising industry. She tells stories with much conviction through her edits and that’s what make her unique.
